COACH CHARLES "Chuck" N. CLUBINE
Born: 09-12-1931,
Died: 09-1971
Chuck came to Arizona from Indiana. He was a mathematics teacher & wrestling
coach for both Varsity and Jr. Varsity teams throughout his career at MHS. In
1965 he was proud of the advancement and record his wrestlers made. With his
many hours of coaching; the Varsity racked up a 5-6 season, and the JV
finished with a superb 9-1 record. In 1966, he paved the way with 9-1
victories in dual competition, 2nd place divisional termination, & a shared
3rd position in state.
He described the team as possessing "desire."
Noticeably proud, the usually taciturn mentor became quite talkative when
reflecting on the wrestling team and its record. He praised all for team
effort, dependability, mental attitude, & competitive spirit; stating it was
a most gratifying experience. In 1970-1971 his coaching led Panthers to a
tie for state championship. The MHS newspaper, "Panther Tracks" Volume # 09,
Number # 02, dated Friday, Oct.1, 1971, printed the following: "Mr. Charles Clubine, wrestling coach & math teacher
at Maryvale for 10 years, died
Friday, of complications following surgery to replace his esophagus. Mr. Clubine was admitted to Scottsdale Memorial Hospital after a nut fragment
became lodged in his esophagi while eating ice cream last summer. He had
been troubled by swallowing problems periodically since he was a child. At
the age of 22 months he swallowed lye. Mr. Clubine led the Panther wrestling
team through many fine years, climaxed by last years state title." |
