My name is Tyler K. Waddell, I was a student in the class of 1966. I have
been looking at the Maryvale Panther website for a few months now, and just
found a request for any info on the "mysterious" time capsule. I have spoken
to a few of my friends, Class of 1964/5, and we recall the time capsule
being buried during the 1963/4 circa. To the best of our recall, the capsule
was placed under or adjacent to the Flagpole. At that time, the Flagpole was
located on the (59th Ave.) side of the main building and just North of the
main entrance steps. This area between the sidewalk and building area was a
grass lawn.
Looking at the 1963 map, I recall the Flagpole somewhere in front of Rooms
202 and 204, but my memory is fading. I would think that someone from the
early Faculty or Student Consul might recall this information better than I.
As for the content of the capsule, I don't recall the contents. This was a
significant event at the time, and I am sure something was published in the
Panthertracks paper or Yearbooks for 1964-66.

What year was it buried?
I think I remember it.
I am thinking somewhere by the Flagpole.

Hey I graduated in 1993 and my history class
buried a time capsule out in front of the school. I know exactly where
too!!!! It was suppose to be opened at our 20 year reunion I believe. Which
as scary as it is to me is only 7 years away.
Well, I remember that we put a TV guide in it and
we all wrote letters to the future generations. I still remember mine. I
think it said be kind to your elders I will be one. HA. I think we included
some other magazines so we could show the fashion of the time. Which what is
really funny is everything we wore is coming back into style now.
I cant really draw a diagram I can take you to the approx. spot. Its buried
out front by one of the two trees to the right of what I guess is the new
cafeteria. At least that's what I think that is that they put in the front
of the school that destroyed the beautiful front of the school. Maryvale
looks like a fortress now.
It was my junior year that we put it together so it didn't include one of
our graduation invitations. I wish it did as our invitations had a picture
of the front of the old school.
I wish I could remember all that was in it and to be honest I have no idea
who was in charge of it. I think I am the only one that remembers we did it.
The instructor we had was Ms. Harkleroad. If I remember correctly it is
buried behind the tree if your standing out in front of the school looking
at the trees. I think it is the second tree but with the construction they
may have removed the first tree and the second tree became the first tree. I
hope this helps. I would love to be there when it is opened!!

I was a member of Maryvale
Library staff for 10 plus years. I believe the time capsule is in the outer
SW corner of the building housing the library. There may be information in
the newspaper Panther Tracks about 1999. It does exist. Happy hunting!

As a Boy Scout (nerdy, I
know), from 1972 through 1978, I remember burying a time capsule as a
community project for Troop #3, Cartwright School. It seems to me that in
about 1976 or 1977, we placed a time capsule in the vacant lots just east of
the Football field. At that time, the open space between Maryvale and 55
Ave. was a little over a quarter of a mile. I believe this time capsule is
now under the sports field of Maryvale. As I recall, we placed the capsule
near the canal. Please let me know if there is any confirmation of this.
Thank you

One of the main locations that I have heard discussed about the location of
the/a Time Capsule is under the cement or in one of the four big square
planters that was located in front of the original Library, It is now called
the “Pit”.
Speculation is that
it was inadvertently dug up during construction. And hauled off or maybe
someone did find it and kept it out of curiosity.

Subject: time capsule
I think that there is one buried underneath the new cafeteria on the west
side of the school. I think that it was buried in 92 or 93. GCUCHICK @aol.com
I know that my brother's
history class buried one, but I cannot remember if it was in 1992 or 1993.

Pass this along, please. In January at MHS, it was learned that a Time
Capsule was buried in 1964. Maybe more were buried, other years. It's time
for a celebration. Or at least a location of all the time capsules that were
buried at Maryvale High School. HELP!!
